Sick Kids...

Last week was pretty crazy, here is an excerpt from an email I sent to my girlfriends:

Mazzy had a high fever the previous week of 103-104 degrees and started to feel better over the weekend. I had been pretty worried that Max would get whatever bug Mazzy had. I was pretty diligent about checking Max for a temp and on Monday night he developed one. I took his temperature and it was 101.8 with one thermometer and 101.2 with another (this is VERY high for an infant only 4 weeks, 3 days old). I called the advice nurse and they told me to take him to the ER.

I arrived with Max at the ER around 7:20. They admitted us and took his temp...it was 101.1, then they took his pulse and it was 211...very high. The nurse led us to a little curtained area and the doctor proceeded to tell us that because max is so little it is protocol to do a number of procedures to rule out the very dangerous infections that he may have. So, after I recovered from the shock of knowing just how much my little baby was to be poked and prodded they performed the following procedures on our little Max Man:

- Took urine sample by catheter (ouch!)
-Took an x-ray of his chest
-They stuck him 3 times in their attempt to put an IV in him.
-Blood Work
-Spinal tap (AHHHHHH!!!!!). I was very absent for this....could not watch!!
-He then pulled out the IV from his hand (during the spinal tap procedure) and so they had to find a vein in his SCALP! OMG! My baby had an IV coming from his little (or big :-)) head!
They told us that Max would have to stay in the hospital for 48 hours. Max was hooked up to 3 leads on his chest and a pulse monitor on his toe and then of course the IV coming from his head. It was very difficult to cuddle and hold him the way I wanted to, my heart was basically breaking from 7pm-2 am. So, after getting to the pediactrics(sp?) ward at 2am, Josh went home to be with Mazzy and I stayed with Max. I probably got 1 hour of sleep that first night.

During our stay things got much better. Tests were coming back negative and Max's temp was considerably lower and stayed that way. Wednesday they were able to turn of the monitor and he only had the IV and I got 6 hours of interrupted sleep that night!;-) WOO HOO!

Wednesday afternoon we found out that Mazzy (who had developed a wicked cough) has the CROUP. So that was cool to find out. ;-)

They discharged us last Thursday at 11:15pm. Max is doing really well and slept for 5 hours straight last night. He is a BIG CHUNCKY MONKEY and should be going long stretches like that so good for him. The nurses kept commenting how cute and CHUBBY he was for a 4 week old. And it's true he's a CHUNK! Mazzy is in really good spirits and Josh did such a fantasic job taking care of her while her Mama was gone.
